Magical hemostatic clip: When will the “guardian” in the stomach “retire”?

What is a ” hemostatic clip “?

Hemostatic clips refer to a consumable used for local wound hemostasis, including the clip part (the part that actually works) and the tail (the part that assists in releasing the clip). Hemostatic clips mainly play a closing role, and achieve the purpose of hemostasis by clamping blood vessels and surrounding tissues. The hemostatic principle is similar to surgical vascular suture or ligation. It is a mechanical method and does not cause coagulation, degeneration, or necrosis of mucosal tissue.

In addition, hemostatic clips have the advantages of being non-toxic, lightweight, high in strength and good in biocompatibility. They are also widely used in polypectomy, endoscopic submucosal dissection ( ESD ), hemostasis, other endoscopic operations requiring closure and auxiliary positioning. Due to the risk of delayed bleeding and perforation after polypectomy and ESD , endoscopists will use titanium clips to close the wound surface according to the intraoperative situation to prevent complications.

Where are hemostatic clips used on the body?

It is used in minimally invasive surgery of the digestive tract or endoscopic treatment of the gastrointestinal tract, such as gastrointestinal polypectomy, endoscopic early cancer resection of the gastrointestinal tract, endoscopic hemostasis of the gastrointestinal tract, etc. Tissue clips play a very important role in these treatments, and most of them are used in tissue closure and hemostasis. Especially when removing polyps, sometimes different numbers of clips are used as needed to prevent complications such as bleeding or perforation.

What material are hemostatic clips made of?

Hemostatic clips are mainly made of titanium alloy and degradable magnesium metal. Titanium alloy hemostatic clips are commonly used in the digestive tract. They have good biocompatibility, strong corrosion resistance, and high strength.

How long does it take for the hemostatic clip to fall off after being installed?

The metal clip inserted through the endoscope channel will gradually combine with the polyp tissue and promote tissue healing. After the wound is completely healed, the metal clip will fall off by itself. Affected by individual physiological differences and clinical conditions, this cycle fluctuates and is usually excreted naturally with feces within 1-2 weeks. It should be noted that the shedding time may be advanced or delayed due to factors such as polyp size, local healing conditions and the body’s repair ability.

Will the internal hemostatic clip affect the MRI examination?

Generally speaking, titanium alloy hemostatic clips usually do not shift or only shift slightly in a magnetic field and do not pose a threat to the examiner. Therefore, MRI examinations can be performed if there are titanium clips in the body. However, sometimes due to different material densities, small artifacts may be produced in MRI imaging. For example, if the examination site is close to the hemostatic clip, such as MRI examinations of the abdomen and pelvis, the doctor doing the MRI needs to be informed in advance before the examination, and the surgical site and material certification must be informed. The patient should choose the most appropriate imaging examination based on the specific composition of the hemostatic clip and the examination site, and after full communication with the doctor.
